Onwards–the write way

My recent holiday enabled me to switch off from the online world for a couple of weeks.  I think it was a good thing to do.  Although I was thoroughly busy, I did have some time to stop and think about things.

I have been blogging on and off since 2008 and I certainly like the creative output.  Mostly when I have been blogging, my goals haven’t been particularly well defined.  I just knew that I wanted to record and share my experiences.  There have been highs and lows present as everyone’s life throws up these sorts of episodes.  This naturally has influenced whether I feel like writing or not.

One thing I know for sure is that I want to write more and blogging provides a platform to be able to do this.  I also wish to go further with my writing.  Firstly though I need to get more thoughts down on the page or typed on my computer and uploaded to this site.

Which brings me to the main point of this post.  I want to push myself to get into the habit of writing more otherwise how am I going to meet my goal of being a writer – first goal is to aim to do this on a part-time basis.  I aim to write more often and in a more coherent and expressive way.

I am in the beginning stages of a writing course which I am finding really rather challenging to force myself to think broadly and write more words.  My writing has never been particularly wordy.  I feel under more pressure doing this course and so far instead of enabling me to write more words, I have actually written less.

I have been reading a decent amount and intend to continue to do so and to broaden the subjects that I read.

There are four more months left of this year and I hope that Wandering Sheila will be a place where readers can find interesting posts.

How about you.  Have you faced any challenges recently?

Well done to you Cathy . I find your blog interesting as you show me place in England that I have never visited. I think it is brilliant that you have a goal of being a writer , I am sure you will achieve it too. I have no confidence , which always has held me back , but then I have never had any goals , , up until now and that is to travel more, and what is holding me back , The lack of money and some lack of confidence too but money is the main one. you will do well xx

I am unfortunately guilty of being sapped by the ‘other’ stuff that is going on around me and hope we can both turn our enjoyment of writing to something more. Time has a way of getting away from me at the moment, but this has been happening for the last 6 years!! My house starts it’s renovation in earnest tomorrow and hopefully my little spot in the world will enable me to get back to what I am meant to be doing and all this other stuff will become a sideline, a distant memory or a source of writing material in the coming months!
Looking forward to reading more of you!! Best wishes :)

I’ll toast to that Ingrid. Wow your house renovation starts. I can just imagine how you must be feeling :-) You certainly have had some amazing experiences recently that may well indeed prove to fuel your writing fire :-)

I am so thrilled for you AND proud of you! I know how hard it is to start out as a writer…and continue on as a writer. :-) I’ll be here cheering you on for sure. You’re doing such good things: challenging yourself, writing, reading, and publishing. You’ll do great!!!

Thank you Krista for your support too :-) Only time will tell how I go, but I’ll keep on pushing myself as best as I can :-)

Hello Cathy, well done on getting a plan together. You are already on the road to success… :-) I’m a great believer in setting goals, it’s the only way I can get stuff done, and this is what I’ve learnt along the way.

Measurable – Goals are useless if we can’t determine if they have been met. Write them down, or put them on your blog! Great motivator to actually do stuff.

Attainable – The journey to where you want to be needs to be attainable, otherwise its going to have a negative effect on you when you can’t reach it. Don’t make it a ‘Mission Impossible’ for yourself.

Meaningful – Make sure the goals you set are what you really want to do? Sometimes a goal that seems worthwhile, doesn’t lead to where you want to be, in fact it might even conflict with your plan. A good way of determining this would be to ask yourself where you want to be with your writing in 6 months?

Get a mantra! Mine is borrowed from a well known sports brand..

    ‘Just Do it!’

    Best wishes,

    Maria

Thank you Maria for stopping by and leaving your thoughts. I do welcome feedback from readers. Maybe I will come up with a mantra and iron out some goals to get me to my larger targets :-)

Cathy, as you know I’m more visual than wordy when it comes to blogging so my advice won’t be too expert….But did want to tell you than you have a really engaging super-realistic, natural style that really captivates. It is so unself-conscious at times. Like just sitting across from you over a coffee or sitting at your kitchen bench. Whatever else don’t lose that. It’s beautiful. x

Janine – I know you are and I love that about your blog because that is just ‘you’. Thank you so much for the lovely comment about my blogging style. I’ll certainly aim to keep that aspect about my writing, I do think it’s important to maintain x
